Quilted Tissue Box Cover

Fall is here, which in our house with 4 kids means…it’s TISSUE SEASON!

Yup.

Tis’ the season of perpetual runny noses, a tissue box in every room, and my yearly frustration with ugly Kleenex boxes. Why do they choose the worst patterns for these boxes?? Very few of the prints are cute, and the cute ones are always sold out. But we quilters are resourceful! So here is quick, simple tutorial to turn your tissue boxes from an eyesore into a pleasant piece of decor.

Quilted Tissue Box Cover

Fabric Requirements:

  • 2 FQs of coordinating fabric. I used scraps from Riley Blake’s solids line.
  • Batting scrap
  • Binding

What you need:

Begin by cutting (2) 13” x 17” pieces from the coordinating FQ (Fat Quarters) and (1) 13” x 17” batting section. Baste the fabric to the batting using adhesive spray, and quilt as desired. Mark the lines with your hera marker. I quilted a simple 1” grid so the final result would be non-directional.

After quilting the section, trim to 12” x 16”. Take your square ruler (6” x 6”) and fabric pencil, and mark a 3.25” square in each corner. Then mark the center of the rectangle, which will be 6” from each edge, and 8” from the top and bottom. Draw a 4” vertical line through the center marking. Using the ruler corner as a guide, mark a 90” angle at each end of that line. Photos are provided below to demonstrate.

Take your scissors and cut along the marked lines. To cut the center section, I like to fold the fabric in half and place a pin through the center of each right angle point. This helps to stabilize the sections while cutting.

After the center opening is cut, pin the 4 sections inward. Stitch around the edge, as shown below. Now to sew the corners. Clip the sides of each corner together using these wonder clips, sew the raw edges together. Repeat for each of the 4 corners. Take a binding scrap about 32” long, and attach to raw edge of the tissue box cover to complete.

And your quilted tissue box cover is finished! Wasn’t that easy? It’s the perfect way to disguise those unsightly Kleenex boxes.
